Frequently Asked Questions

What are the GST slab rates in India?
India's GST has four main slab rates: 5% for essential items like packaged food, economy travel, and small restaurants; 12% for processed food, business class travel, and state-run liquor; 18% for most goods and services including electronics, financial services, and restaurants in hotels; and 28% for luxury and demerit goods like automobiles, tobacco, and aerated drinks. Some items like unbranded food grains, fresh produce, and healthcare are exempt from GST entirely.
What is the difference between CGST, SGST, and IGST?
CGST (Central GST) and SGST (State GST) are levied together on intra-state transactions, each at half the total GST rate. For example, an 18% GST item sold within a state attracts 9% CGST and 9% SGST. IGST (Integrated GST) applies to inter-state transactions and imports at the full rate (18% in this example). IGST is collected by the central government and later apportioned to the destination state, ensuring tax revenue reaches the state where goods are consumed.
Who needs to register for GST in India?
Registration is mandatory if your annual aggregate turnover exceeds 40 lakh rupees for goods (20 lakh for special category states) or 20 lakh rupees for services (10 lakh for special category states). Additionally, interstate suppliers, e-commerce operators, persons required to pay reverse charge, and casual taxable persons must register regardless of turnover. The composition scheme offers simplified compliance for small businesses with turnover up to 1.5 crore rupees.
How do I calculate GST on a product?
To add GST to a base price, multiply by (1 + GST rate). For example, a product costing 1,000 rupees at 18% GST has a final price of 1,180 rupees. To extract GST from an inclusive price, divide by (1 + GST rate) and subtract. From 1,180 rupees inclusive: 1,180 / 1.18 = 1,000 rupees base price, so the GST component is 180 rupees. For intra-state sales, this splits equally as 90 rupees CGST and 90 rupees SGST.
Can I claim input tax credit under GST?
Yes, registered businesses can claim input tax credit (ITC) on GST paid for business purchases, which reduces the GST payable on sales. To claim ITC, you need a valid tax invoice, the goods or services must be used for business purposes, and your supplier must have filed their return and paid the tax. ITC cannot be claimed for personal use items, certain blocked credits like food and beverages, or by businesses on the composition scheme.
