How the Nigerian CGPA System Works

Nigerian universities regulated by the National Universities Commission (NUC) predominantly use a 5-point cumulative grade point average (CGPA) system. Each course is assigned a number of credit units (typically 1–6), and your grade in each course is converted to grade points: A equals 5.0, B equals 4.0, C equals 3.0, D equals 2.0, E equals 1.0, and F equals 0.0. Your CGPA is the sum of all quality points (grade points multiplied by credit units) divided by total credit units attempted.

Degree classifications in Nigeria are determined by your final CGPA: First Class Honours (4.50–5.00), Second Class Upper Division (3.50–4.49), Second Class Lower Division (2.40–3.49), Third Class (1.50–2.39), and Pass (1.00–1.49). Achieving a First Class is highly prestigious and typically represents the top 5–10 per cent of graduates. A Second Class Upper is the minimum requirement for most postgraduate programmes and competitive graduate schemes.

Nigerian Degree Classifications

The gap between Second Class Upper and First Class is significant in the Nigerian job market. Many employers, banks, and oil companies specifically require a minimum of Second Class Upper (3.50 CGPA) for their graduate trainee programmes. Some polytechnics and colleges of education use a 4-point scale instead of the 5-point scale, so it is important to verify which system your institution uses before calculating your CGPA.

Credit units matter enormously in the Nigerian system. A single F in a 6-unit course can devastate your CGPA far more than an F in a 1-unit course.
