Tipping Guide: How Much Should You Tip?

Tipping is a customary practice in many countries, though the expected amount varies widely by culture, service type, and setting. This calculator helps you determine the right tip and easily split the bill among a group.

Standard Tip Percentages in the United States

• Sit-down restaurants: 15–20% is standard; 20–25% for exceptional service.
• Buffet: 10% is common since there is less table service.
• Coffee shops / counter service: $1–$2 or 15–20% for specialty drinks.
• Bartenders: $1–$2 per drink or 15–20% of the tab.
• Food delivery: 15–20%, with a minimum of $3–$5.
• Hair salons / barbers: 15–20% of the service total.
• Taxi / rideshare: 15–20%.
• Hotel housekeeping: $2–$5 per night.

Tipping Etiquette Around the World

Customs differ drastically by country. In Japan, tipping is generally considered rude and may cause confusion. In most of Europe, a service charge is often included in the bill, though rounding up or leaving a small amount (5–10%) is appreciated. In Australia and New Zealand, tipping is not expected but is welcome for excellent service. In Canada and the United States, tipping is a fundamental part of service worker compensation, as base wages in tipped positions are often below the standard minimum wage.

Pre-Tax vs. Post-Tax Tipping

Traditionally, tips are calculated on the pre-tax subtotal. However, many people tip on the total after tax for simplicity. Either approach is acceptable. On a $100 meal with 8% tax, the difference between tipping 20% pre-tax ($20) and post-tax ($21.60) is minimal.

Splitting the Bill

When dining with a group, you can split the total evenly or have each person calculate their share individually. For large parties (typically 6 or more), many restaurants automatically add an 18–20% gratuity. Always check your receipt before adding an additional tip.
